The last two emphatic sentences reveal why Marx approaches the possibility of defining a measure and a transformative ethic for secular human relationships cautiously: Heidegger deliberately distances the task of thinking from calculative and Productionist Metaphysics. However, despite Schoeller-von Haslingen’s endorsement of Heidegger’s view as a doctrine to dissolve Marx’s project into another, albeit laudable, metaphysical gambit,17 Heidegger also prefaced these comments with the earnest recognition that there is a need for the greatest care in fostering our ethical bonds in an age where the world is delivered over to mass technology and the Enframing of Productionist Metaphysics.18 In the light of Heidegger’s remarks, Marx therefore asks:

What are the essential characteristics of a measure as such, if it is no longer tied to ‘heavenly beings’ as the absolute sources of normative measures? Must not a philosophy that inquires into the foundation for an ethics concerning one’s fellow man and that is supposed to provide a measure on earth, first ask whether we must not find another way to conceive of the essence of measurer?19
